As experienced caterers, we know what works when it comes to planning your event. That’s why we’ve partnered up with some of the most professionally run and beautiful venues around.

Every month we’ll be choosing one as our ‘Venue of the Month’; this time, it’s the historic Fonmon Castle!

In its 800 years sitting in the Vale of Glamorgan Fonmon Castle has gained history, almost three acres of green grounds and an overwhelming amount of charm.

Ancient oak trees, glistening lawns, wishing wells and a stunning ivy-covered building are all to be found at Fonmon Castle – and that’s before you’ve even seen its Georgian interiors.

What type of venue is Fonmon Castle?

The short version is that Fonmon Castle is, well, a classic castle. The detailed version is that it’s a classic, fairytale-esque castle that dates back to the 12th century and has a picturesque drive, stunning white gates, and library described as ‘the glory of Fonmon’.

Inside the leafy Castle you will find a stunning hall, decorated with grand family portraits and a sparkling Georgian chandelier, and an elegant drawing room which flows directly into the garden.

The cosy Old Kitchen gives off an historic atmosphere as many of the original characteristics of a medieval kitchen have been retained. If you plan to have a private dining experience there expect silver meal covers, authentic furniture, and swords.

The Castle has not one, but two libraries (it is a castle after all). The Little Library joins with Lady Anne’s Room on the first floor and boasts impressive views of the lawn, while the main Library is adorned with rococo plasterwork and gilded mirrors (and has a collection of books that dates back to the 15th Century).

What makes it special?

With its romantic buildings, striking interiors and luscious grounds, Fonmon Castle is nothing less than a gorgeous venue and is recognised as such. The Castle itself is a Grade I listed building of ‘exceptional interest’. The rarity of such a grading (only 2% of buildings in UK are given a Grade I listing) makes the venue very special indeed.

The Castle is also covered with eye-catching ivy that glows a glossy green in the summer and a striking bright red in the autumn.

Fonmon Castle isn’t just about its buildings and grounds, however; it’s also about its people. In its 800 year history the Castle has only ever belonged to two families (the St John family who owned it from the 1200s to 1917, and the Boothbys who have owned it ever since) and it continues to be used as a home.

This caring, family-feel isn’t just reserved for relatives, as the people at Fonmon go out of their way to be amazing hosts. Offering bespoke events, making sure any celebrations you plan are special and even flying a flag from the castle tower.

What type of event is it ideal for?

With such a varied number of spaces inside the Castle and out, Fonmon caters to all sorts of events: from small celebratory meals to corporate away-days and big dream weddings.

A wedding at Fonmon Castle means plenty of options. So you can have the day you want; whether it’s intimate or grand, formal or relaxed, classic or creative.

You can exchange vows in the idyllic Library before sitting down to a delicious meal, enjoy a glass of champagne on the porch and taste canapés in the elegant Hall. You can also make the most of the Castle’s breathtaking setting with Marquee on the lawn that can seat up to 200 guests (and don’t fret if the weather is bad, as it’s easy to move into the elegant drawing room).

With its remarkable rooms and colourful grounds, there is also a whole host of places to take memorable photographs.

One of the best aspects of booking a wedding at Fonmon Castle is the exclusivity. The Castle is only ever hired out on an exclusive-to-you basis, so you and your guests can enjoy your time there without bumping into any other parties.

Weddings aren’t the only events the Fonmon Castle provides. The Boothby family has been celebrating their birthdays at the Castle for hundreds of years and know how to throw a party for any occasion. They have played host to royalty, heads of state, and stars of the stage and screen.

They can arrange an elegant Afternoon Tea, cocktails on the lawns, fabulous three-course meals, dancing in the Hall and all sorts of entertainment from magicians to musicians.

Their corporate packages also offer fun team-building activites and a welcome break from dimly lit conference rooms.
